Move Out Cleaning in Calgary: A Room by Room Checklist

Move out cleaning in Calgary by Clean Force Solutions

In Alberta, a damage deposit can be as much as a full month's rent, and at your move out inspection your landlord can deduct cleaning costs from that deposit if the home is not left clean. That makes the final clean one of the most expensive jobs on your moving list to get wrong.

Whether you rent a condo in the Beltline, a house in Kensington, Mission or Bridgeland, or a townhouse in Tuscany, the standard at handover is the same: the home should look the way it did when you moved in, allowing for normal wear and tear.

This guide is the checklist our team works from on move out cleans in Calgary, room by room. Use it to do the clean yourself, split it with a cleaner, or hand the whole list over and spend your last day on the move itself.

What landlords and property managers check first

Experienced landlords and property managers walk a home in a set order, and they open things. These are the spots that fail inspection most often:

- Inside the oven, including the broiler drawer underneath

- Behind and under the fridge and stove, where grease and dust collect for years

- The range hood filter, usually coated in grease

- Bathroom exhaust fan covers, grey with dust

- Grout and caulk lines in the shower and around the tub

- Window tracks, packed with dust and marked by condensation

- Inside cupboards, drawers and closets, not just the fronts

A quick wipe of the counters and floors will not pass this walk. The checklist below covers every one of these spots in the room where it belongs.

Start with the kitchen

Kitchens take the longest on a move out clean, so start here while you still have energy and supplies.

- Empty and wipe inside every cupboard and drawer, including the crumbs in the corners

- Clean inside the oven, and clean out the broiler drawer below it

- Pull out the fridge and stove if they can be moved safely, an

d clean behind and under them

- Take out the range hood filter and wash the grease off it

- Degrease the stovetop, hood fan and backsplash

- Wipe countertops, sink and taps, and polish stainless steel

- Sweep and mop the floor last, after the other rooms are done

If you only hire help for one room, make it this one. Oven and cupboard interiors are the spots most often flagged on a move out walkthrough.

Bathrooms: detail is the whole job

- Scrub the tub, shower, tiles and grout lines

- Scrub the caulk lines around the tub and sink, where mildew staining shows

- Take down the exhaust fan cover and wash the dust off it

- Descale taps, shower glass and mirrors

- Clean inside vanity cupboards and drawers

- Disinfect the toilet, including the base and behind it

- Wash the floor, with attention to corners and baseboards

Hard water marks are common in Calgary homes, and Calgary's hard water leaves white scale on taps and shower glass that a fast wipe will not shift. Give those spots extra time, or note them for your cleaner so they bring the right products.

Bedrooms and living areas

With furniture out, these rooms are mostly surfaces, which makes them satisfying and fast.

- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, vents and window sills

- Wipe window tracks, where chinook dust and winter condensation settle

- Spot clean walls for scuffs and fingerprints, especially around light switches and doors

- Wipe baseboards and door frames

- Clean inside closets, including shelves and rods

- Vacuum carpets slowly in two directions, then mop hard floors

An empty room shows every mark. Walk each room once in daylight before you call it done.

The spots people forget

- Inside window tracks

- Laundry tub and the tops of the washer and dryer

- Furnace room floor around the equipment

- Garage sweeping, if your lease or sale agreement includes it

- Light switch plates and door handles throughout the home

- The entryway closet and front step, where winter gravel and road salt get tracked in all season

How long a move out clean takes and what affects the price

For an empty home, a move out clean typically takes:

- Studio or 1 bedroom condo: about 2 to 3 hours

- 2 bedroom home: about 3 to 4 hours

- 3 bedroom home: about 4 to 6 hours

- Larger homes: 6 hours or more

These are typical ranges, not a promise. Four things move the time, and the price with it: the size of the home, the condition it is left in, whether the inside of the appliances is included, and the state of the carpets. A home that has been kept up takes far less time than one catching up on a year of oven grease and bathroom scale.

Move out cleans are priced by home size on our booking page; a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom home is $485.

When to book a professional move out clean in Calgary

Book as soon as your move out date is firm. In Calgary, month end is the busiest stretch for movers and cleaners alike, and the last week of the month fills first. If you can, leave a day between the clean and your walkthrough, so there is time to deal with anything the inspection flags.

A professional move out clean makes the most sense when:

- Your possession or lease end date and your cleaning window are the same day

- The home needs a deep clean as well as the move out detail work

- You have already moved out of the city or cannot get back for a walkthrough fix up

Tell your cleaner the home will be empty, whether utilities will still be on, and how access works on the day. That avoids delays and makes sure the team brings everything they need.

Move out cleaning is different from a regular clean

A regular house clean maintains a lived in home. A move out clean covers the inside of appliances, cupboards and closets, plus the wall and baseboard detail that only shows when a home is empty. It sits much closer to deep cleaning in Calgary homes than to a regular visit, because nothing is hidden by furniture. If you are moving in rather than out, the same checklist works in reverse: clean before your furniture arrives, while every surface is easy to reach.

Questions we hear most

How far ahead should I book move out cleaning in Calgary?

As soon as your move out date is firm. Two weeks ahead is comfortable most of the year, but the last week of the month books up first, so month end moves are worth booking earlier.

How long does a move out clean take?

For an empty home, about 2 to 3 hours for a small condo and 4 to 6 hours for a 3 bedroom home. Condition matters as much as size: heavy oven grease, hard water scale and carpet state can all add time.

Do utilities need to stay on for the clean?

Yes. The team needs water for cleaning and power for lights and the vacuum. Keep both on until after the clean and your walkthrough are done.

What is the difference between a move in clean and a move out clean?

The checklist is the same. A move out clean is done on the home you are leaving, for the landlord or the next owner. Move in cleaning in Calgary is the same detail work done on your new home before your furniture arrives, so every surface is easy to reach and the home starts fresh.
